Stahl Sheaffer Engineering Updates State College Borough on Traffic Enhancement Project

State College, PA, December 12, 2012

Aaron Fayish, P.E., PTOE, of Stahl Sheaffer Engineering, updated the State College Borough Transportation Commission on a project to re-time 22 traffic signals. Based on data collected on pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle movements through downtown, the project shows potential for delay and travel time reductions. The project also aims for a better pedestrian flow, timing signals to allow for longer and more frequent pedestrian crossings downtown. SSE hopes to submit data for state Department of Transportation review by the end of the year. Completion is likely in the spring. Stahl Sheaffer Engineering Invited to World Competition

State College, PA, October 30, 2012

Stahl Sheaffer Engineering, LLC (SSE) has proven its expertise in an unconventional feat of engineering prowess. The firm’s 18-foot high trebuchet that hurled pumpkins more than 1000 feet at a recent event has made the cut for the World Championship Punkin Chunkin competition to be held in Delaware, November 2-4.

The World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association (WCPCA) is a trademark nonprofit that raises money for scholarships, as well as organizations that benefit youth and the local community. The yearly signature pumpkin-launching event fuels innovative engineering and science-based ideas that draw spectators from all over the world. Find out more at http://www.punkinchunkin.com/ and watch the event on The Discovery Channel November 22 at 8pm.

A trebuchet is a type of catapult, one of 9 adult chunking classes included in the worldwide competition. The word originates from the French name for a medieval war machine that was used to fling projectiles, including boulders, dead horses, and diseased bodies into or over castle walls to soften the defenses in preparation for invasion. The Stahl Sheaffer Engineering trebuchet was designed as a Floating Arm Trebuchet (FAT) model, and is used only to fling pumpkins (no bodies or boulders).

A key part of the Stahl Sheaffer Engineering trebuchet team is the Howard Fire Company, which holds its own local Punkin Chunkin event at Bald Eagle State Park in PA. The 2012 event drew approximately fifteen thousand people, a huge fundraising success for the fire company as well as a fun event for those who got to watch the pumpkins fly. Stahl Sheaffer Engineering’s Josh Collins, P.E. drove this initiative, taking responsibility for design oversight, building the machine, coordinating the Howard Fire Company event, and coordinating the team for the Championship event.

The organization’s mission is to “ensure that children, youth, and families will have opportunities to realize and fulfill their potential for growth and development through their participation in a continuum of community-based, family-based, and residential programs.”

Rod Stahl, a principal of Stahl Sheaffer Engineering, said, “We wanted to take positive action in a way that would not only provide awareness of what YSB is doing for youth in this community, but also to give these kids a great experience they might not otherwise have.” Stahl Sheaffer Engineering is donating tickets for the Penn State vs. Ohio State football game on October 27 to Big Brothers / Big Sisters.

Stahl Sheaffer is issuing a request – and providing an opportunity – for others who want to help. There are 200 kids in the Big Brothers / Big Sisters program. Stahl Sheaffer Engineering Powers Forward with Natural Gas

State College, PA, September 23, 2012
Stahl Sheaffer Engineering, LLC, a civil engineering firm, manages transportation enhancement and road condition surveying for many companies in the Marcellus and Utica Shale plays. It’s only fitting that Stahl Sheaffer has begun converting its trucks, which traverse much of the Shale geography, to compressed natural gas. While Stahl Sheaffer provides engineering services in many areas (structural, municipal services, land development, bridge design, construction inspection), the strong focus on transportation-related engineering means that fueling up with natural gas has already generated significant cost savings. The firm logged hundreds of thousands of miles last year on roadway condition inspections alone, and that number will only increase as the company continues to service existing and future clients. And the abundant supply of natural gas in the Marcellus and Utica Shale plays, coupled with the rising price of gasoline, means that the savings for using this cleaner-burning fuel will be even higher in the near future. Stahl Sheaffer will be looking for ways to pass on those cost savings to clients. The other huge benefit – to the firm, its clients, and everyone else – is the reduced air toxins and greenhouse emissions that impact the environment.Stahl Sheaffer Engineering continues to pursue new approaches in roadway, municipal, and structural engineering that result in better solutions for its clients.
